Rail Travels

I am a huge railroad buff and have traveled on the rails throughout the US and Europe. In fact, of the RailWorks (tm) routes in England alone, I have been on the York, Bath and Oxford routes. My favorite rail museums are the one in York and the one in the city that I live in Sacramento, California.  I have ridden the rails in Germany, Austria, Denmark and Sweden too, including the high speed train from Stockholm to Malmo. One of my favorites is the run from Garmisch to Innsbruck.

Getting Started

This blog has been created to discuss RailWorks (tm) development of North American routes. My own current project is the Trans-Sierra Nevada route historically used by the Southern Pacific Railroad and currently the Union Pacific Railroad.  This project is still in process. I love editing the "flying trees" which can me seen in some of these screenshots. This route is over 100 miles in length running from Colfax (where the route starts to get interesting) all the way to Sparks. The topography was gleened from NASA's .hgt files and the route was completely engineered from scratch. It is not perfect, but hey, a project of this size never is. I have added several fun shortline routes to add some color to the project. These include some that have historical background, i.e., the Grass Valley/Nevada City route (which due to the limitations of the game I had to do in standard guage), and the long abandoned Truckee to North Lake Tahoe tourist route. I have also added several mining operations with side spurs. One is attached to the Grass Valley route and is a mining operation in the Yuba River canyon. The second is a mine that is above Alta. Both of these are gold mining operations.  The third is a granite mine that is on the backside of Boca Reservoir.
